The WAMM Master Chronosonic stands apart from every other loudspeaker Wilson Audio has or will ever build in one inviolable respect:
It is an icon, frozen in time.
Every other Wilson loudspeaker has a life cycle. It’s born, responsibly updated with new technology as it becomes available, and eventually, in most cases, replaced by something altogether new that evolved out of the function it was first conceived to serve. Hence, the WATT/Puppy becomes Sasha, the Grand SLAMM becomes Alexandria, then the XLF, and so on.
The WAMM was the last loudspeaker designed by Dave Wilson.
It was consciously intended as his magnum opus, the ultimate manifestation of the things he spent his entire career chasing—from the earliest days messing around with Dahlquist DQ10s, RTR electrostatic tweeters and Braun mini monitors hanging from the ceiling with aircraft wire—and discovering his ears could hear changes in the time domain that measurements couldn’t register.
Observation and experimentation: core to who he was, but not the whole story. Ferraris, IWC watches, Leica cameras: craftsmanship and design, the pleasure of the well-made thing. All of that was part of Dave’s DNA, and it’s there in the WAMM Master Chronosonic as well.
The Audio Salon is proud have been involved in multiple WAMM installations, including several that Dave himself participated in. He was always the first to say there is no perfect speaker, but half a decade since its introduction, the WAMM Master Chronosonic can still take pride of place among those instruments that lay claim to State-of-the-Art.
Decades from now, will that still be true? From a purely technical perspective, arguably not. The thing that time can’t alter, though, is that it will always remain the purest expression of the passion and care of one of the great pioneers in the audio industry.
And of the 70 WAMMs that will ever be made, there are still new ones to be sold.
